Five useful basics. Fewer things gathering dust in the shed.

Start with the jobs, then the tools
For a few containers or one small bed, our starter shortlist is a comfortable hand trowel, gloves that fit, a watering can or hose that reaches, plant labels, and a bucket for carrying supplies. Add a pruning tool when your plants actually need one.
What deserves a place
Try the grip if you can. Check how the tool will be cleaned and stored, and whether replacement parts are available. A compact kit you enjoy using can be a better fit than a large set bought for completeness.
What can wait
Specialty seed gadgets, large tool bundles and powered equipment can wait until a repeated task justifies them. Borrow an occasional-use tool before deciding to keep one. Plan your growing space first, including how you will carry water to it.
