Seed-starting supplies that have a job

Build a modest setup before buying the entire aisle.

Research-based guide · Updated September 30, 2026 · Not a hands-on product test

Begin with the basics

Use suitable containers with drainage, seed-starting medium, labels and a way to water gently. Choose seeds with a planting schedule that fits your climate and the time available before outdoor planting.

Light comes before extras

Seedlings need sufficient light. Consider where they will grow and how you will provide that light before adding more trays. A shelf packed with seedlings is only useful if you can care for all of them.

Buy for one season of learning

Our suggestion: begin with a limited number of varieties and keep notes on sowing dates and results. Save the empty packets. Follow crop-specific guidance for depth, temperature and timing rather than applying one schedule to everything.

Before you buy
Check your seeds’ temperature needs. A heat mat does not replace light; confirm whether a thermostat is included.
