Build an outage kit you can actually use

Start with light, communication, water, and the needs of your household.

Research-based guide · Updated September 30, 2026 · Not a hands-on product test

Plan for the disruption, then choose supplies

A useful kit supports a plan. Think through an evening without power, a longer interruption, and a situation that requires leaving home. Ready.gov provides a supply checklist and family planning resources. Use local emergency guidance to decide what is appropriate for your area and household, including children, medications, pets, and livestock.

Light and communication first

Check the flashlights and charging equipment you already own. Confirm which batteries and cables they need and store those together. Consider a battery-powered or hand-crank radio as described in Ready.gov’s checklist. When comparing new equipment, read its operating instructions and charging requirements rather than choosing from a headline runtime alone.

Make water and food practical

Use the official checklist to plan drinking water and shelf-stable food, adjusting for your household’s needs and local advice. Include a manual can opener if your food requires one. Store supplies where you can find and inspect them. A kit that cannot be reached easily during an outage is less useful than a modest, organized set of essentials.

Test the routine before you need it

Choose a storage spot and tell the household where it is. Without shutting off essential equipment, practice finding a flashlight, connecting a phone to a power bank, and locating emergency contacts. Note missing cables or confusing controls. A short dry run helps you buy the particular thing you need instead of another generic kit.

Keep a maintenance card

Put a dated list beside the supplies: battery checks, food and water rotation according to their instructions, contact updates, and changes in household needs. Review the list when the seasons change. Powered equipment and fuel storage require their own safety instructions; do not improvise indoor generator or combustion-appliance use.
