Containers or raised beds?
Choose the growing space that fits the place you have.
Research-based guide · Updated September 29, 2026 · Not a hands-on product test
Containers: flexible, with limits
Containers can suit patios and modest spaces. You can change the arrangement, but a filled pot may be difficult to move. Pot size must suit the crop, and watering access matters.
Raised beds: a bigger commitment
A raised bed offers a defined growing area, but involves siting, construction or purchase, and filling. Measure paths and reach before deciding its dimensions. Include the cost and effort of filling the bed in your plan.
Our decision rule
Choose containers if you want to start with one or two plants or expect your layout to change. Consider a raised bed when you have a suitable lasting location and want a larger connected growing area. Neither choice removes the need for regular care.
