A container garden, without the overwhelm
A practical list for your first pot of herbs or vegetables.

The essential shortlist
Start with a container sized for the mature plant, suitable container potting mix, the plant or seed, a watering tool, and a label. A support belongs on the list if the crop needs one. Check drainage before bringing a planter home.
Measure before you buy
Note your available space and the light it receives. Check the plant tag or seed packet for its needs. A large pot filled with wet mix is heavy; place it before filling and think about access for watering.
Our practical filter
Pick a container you can reach easily and maintain regularly. Start with a plant you will actually use. Keep the first setup small enough that checking it becomes part of your day, rather than another project to catch up on.
